Cooling Fans Stay On After Shutdown

Cooling Fans That Stay On Aren’t Always an Overheating Issue.

Many modern vehicles run fans after shutdown to cool turbochargers or dissipate residual heat.
But when they stay on too long — or run all the time while driving — it can indicate deeper issues like:

  • Faulty fan control module
  • Failed coolant temp sensor
  • Broken thermostat
  • Shorted wiring or corroded grounds

Electric cooling fans that keep running after the engine shuts off can be more than just annoying, they may signal a deeper issue.  At this shop, fan behavior is tested with attention to sensor inputs, module logic, relay function, and actual circuit load, not just code scans.

Fan systems in modern vehicles are often tied to temperature sensors, A/C control logic, or even intentional, timed,  power-off strategies.  If one signal is out of range or missing, the default failsafe may command the fans to stay on continuously.

Testing here doesn’t rely on guesswork or part-swapping. Sensor outputs are scoped, control circuits are confirmed, and fan modules are verified under actual engine-off conditions.   Whether it’s a stuck relay or a faulty module, the issue is traced down to the root cause.

This isn’t just about checking the relay or changing out a sensor.
Testing includes current draw, ground path integrity, and fan module command verification through scan tools or oscilloscope traces.
